Magic Nights: replaying Champions Cup history

Pick a season, pick a club, and try to win Europe’s biggest prize.

Magic Nights is a one-off cup mode built on the history of Europe's top club competition. You choose any season since 1990–91, take charge of one of the clubs that played in it, and try to lift the Champions Cup with the squad they had that year. Every club, squad and format is as it was.

Choosing a season

The season picker lists every edition since 1990–91, with a short note on the format. The early nineties were pure knockout. The format then moved through group stages of different sizes, a second group stage, and eventually the modern league phase with thirty-six clubs. Each one plays differently, and part of the fun is learning how.

Choosing a club

Any club that took part in that season can be yours. A favourite gives you the best chance. An outsider gives you a story: taking a club from the bottom half of the field all the way to the trophy is one of the hardest achievements in the game.

The formats

Knockout rounds. Two legs, home and away. In the seasons where it applied, away goals decide a tie that is level on aggregate. If it is still level, there is extra time and then penalties.

Group stages. Clubs play each other home and away in groups of four. The top sides go through to the knockout rounds. Some seasons had a second group stage before the quarter-finals.

The league phase. From 2024–25 every club plays eight different opponents in one big table. The top eight go straight to the last sixteen, the next sixteen play a knockout play-off, and the rest go home.

Playing a match

Each matchday works like a league matchweek: set your line-up and tactics, then press Ready. In Magic Nights you can also follow a match as it happens, adjust your tactics and make substitutions, or simply simulate it. Knockout ties show the aggregate score, extra time and penalties when they happen.

The competition view

The competition page shows everything in one place: your path so far, the groups or the league table, and a bracket for the knockout rounds that fills in as the competition goes on. Wages and contracts are switched off in Magic Nights. There is only the cup.

Achievements

  • European Night. Win a Magic Night and lift the Champions Cup.
  • The Impossible Job. Win it with a club from the bottom half of the field.
  • Nerves of Steel. Win a knockout tie on penalties.

Magic Night titles also count on the leaderboard.

Which seasons to try first

For a first Magic Night, pick a recent season with the league phase and a strong club. The long league phase forgives a bad result or two, and you will learn how the tie and bracket screens work before the pressure arrives.

For a challenge, go back to the early nineties. With no group stage at all, a single bad night over two legs ends the run. It is short, tense and very satisfying when it comes off.

The seasons with a second group stage sit in between: lots of matches, but a group of four strong sides can trip anyone up.

Managing a squad from another era

Historical squads are built from the players those clubs actually had, so some will be thin in a position or rely heavily on one or two stars. Before the first match, look at the squad screen and check:

  • Who is your best eleven? It is not always the obvious one, and the formation should suit it.
  • Where are you weakest? A shaky full-back is worth protecting with a more defensive mentality.
  • How deep is the bench? In a long competition, fitness matters and you will need to rotate.

Playing it live

Watching a match live lets you react: a substitution when a player tires, a change of mentality when you are chasing a goal, or a more defensive setup when you are protecting a lead late in the second leg. Simulating is quicker, but on the big nights it is worth watching.

Tips for European nights

  • Two-legged ties reward patience. A narrow away defeat is not a disaster.
  • In the seasons with away goals, a goal on the road is worth more than it looks.
  • Rotate in the group stage if your place is already secure.
  • Penalties are a lottery, but a lottery you only enter by drawing.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Theory is cheap.
Points are not.
